Overview
Sunset View Elementary School sits above the iconic Sunset Cliffs, where ocean views, coastal wildlife, and a strong community that has sent generations of families through its classrooms shape the character of the neighborhood. As part of a complete campus modernization, San Diego Unified School District partnered with Cubic Orange to redesign the school's visual identity and develop an environmental graphics system that reflects the school's culture while creating a more welcoming and intuitive campus experience.
Working alongside Sprotte Watson Architecture, we created a cohesive identity that extends seamlessly from the logo into wayfinding, signage, architectural graphics, and shared learning spaces.
Challenge
The new campus needed more than signage. It needed an identity that could strengthen school pride, simplify navigation, and create memorable moments throughout the student experience.
Our challenge was to develop a visual language that felt authentic to Sunset View while integrating naturally with the architecture and meeting the technical requirements of a public school environment.
Our Approach
We believe the strongest environmental branding begins with understanding the character of a place.
For Sunset View, we looked beyond the campus itself and drew inspiration from the surrounding coastline, the school's mission, and the community that has shaped it for generations. Every graphic element was designed as part of a larger identity system, allowing the campus to feel consistent, recognizable, and easy to navigate while complementing the architecture rather than competing with it.
Visual Identity
The visual identity draws inspiration from Sunset View's connection to the Pacific Ocean and the natural beauty of Sunset Cliffs. A bold whale tail icon became the foundation of the identity, evolving into a flowing graphic pattern that creates continuity throughout the campus.
Rounded typography was selected to echo the soft curves of the logo, creating harmony between the identity and the architecture. We also developed a custom illustration toolkit inspired by the local environment, featuring stylized marine life, coastal wildlife, waves, books, and playful educational moments. Children remain at the center of every illustration, reinforcing the school's commitment to curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.
Design Philosophy
A school's identity should do more than identify a place. It should create a sense of belonging.
Inspired by the dramatic coastline and the vibrant culture surrounding Sunset Cliffs, we designed an environment where branding becomes part of the architecture and storytelling becomes part of everyday life. Every graphic, pattern, and illustration was created to celebrate exploration, creativity, and community while helping students build a deeper connection to their campus.
By extending the visual identity into the built environment, we transformed everyday spaces into opportunities for learning, discovery, and school pride.
The Outcome
The result is a campus identity system that extends far beyond traditional signage. By bringing together branding, environmental graphics, and wayfinding into one cohesive experience, Sunset View now reflects the energy of its community while creating a campus that is welcoming, memorable, and built to inspire future generations.
